Just like Godard and Anna Karina, or Bergman and Liv Ullmann, Rebecca Zlotowski's muse appears to be Lea Seydoux's boobs

Allow me to say this as the kickstart, I only know of this film because when I was the publicist at K Records one of our recording artists, Jeremy Jay, was ecstatic to have one of his songs in the film. As a film lover and wannabe Parisian, the stamp of a French film + iconography of motorcycles in cinema sent him on a high. Now, Jeremy Jay is a Peter Pan artist who does covers (literally and metaphorically) of Suicide, through the guise of stunted youth, trading nihilism for ice cream cones and skating rinks with the background sounds of underground 70s New York. I don't think Belle Epine got a proper US release, but he went to Cannes…

Rebecca Zlotowski's Belle epine is a dark, visually stylish coming-of-age story led by a killer turn from the always-great Lea Seydoux. The story is always bleak, showing how Seydoux's character, Prudence, journeys down a dangerous path as a result of neglect. Perhaps it could have landed with more impact if Prudence and the supporting cast were given more development, but any opportunity to see Seydoux take center stage is worthwhile.

A compelling drama that details Prudence's adventure into self-destruction after a tragic event; doing away with sentimentality to make room for identifiable characters and emotions. Seydoux is understated and believable.

Einiges erinnert sogar an Verhoevens SPETTERS.

Lea Seydoux comes out to play and greets the brand new day in this intriguing, Akerman-esque meditation on youth rebellion and alienation. Think of it as a minimalist, artsy coming-of-age drama. Despite the brisk runtime, this feels appropriately slow and contemplative. It's shot in a handheld style with a retro-sounding, organ score that I find so weird but fascinating. It also goes without saying that the film is another fine showcase of Seydoux's soul-piercing gaze and intense acting talents. Here she stars as the eponymous heroine, a wayward teen who recently lost her mother and now lives alone in an empty apartment. She befriends a fellow delinquent named Marilyn who in turn introduces her to the dangerous and exciting world of biker gangs. This is a nice, dreamy little film in general, and I'd like to imagine it to be some sort of loose, modern, and very French prequel to The Girl on a Motorcycle.

Léas character is a so called neglected young girl dealing with grief, who searchs for care and all other things along her despair, lonely feelings for life. in general, its all good. looks vivid and has the typical melodramatic, plan french style which just tells a "normal" story and theres no pretention besides that (which for me is great). it shouldve been gayer though, since it starts off with the girls, then one of them talks about a crush in their female teacher...lost some potential id say - so maybe, just maybe, this could also casually be seen as a sexually repressed story. no reason at all for this low rating.
